Chapter Fourteen

A three-hundred-dollar emergency locksmith visit and a sleepless night left Simone more than a little cranky at the knock that came on her door at seven the next morning. Expecting to find Lance, she was still pleasantly surprised when she opened the door to Erika West, two cups of coffee and a baker’s box of fresh Danish.

Erika bustled into the apartment dressed in a T-shirt, blue yoga pants and running shoes. “I heard about the break-in. I figured you could use some morning cheer. Sorry about the early hour, but I can’t stay long. I have to get back to the B and B.”

“If that’s a cinnamon latte I smell, I’m willing to forgive you anything,” Simone said, turning the brand-new bolt on the door to lock it before joining Erika at the table.

“It is. I didn’t know whether you liked cinnamon or pumpkin spice, so I got one of each.”

“Either. Both. Beggars can’t be choosers and I am definitely a beggar this morning. I didn’t get any sleep last night.”

“I bet. I can’t believe someone broke into your apartment.”

“They didn’t just break in.” Simone sipped her coffee.

Erika’s eyebrow went up. “No?”

“They also left a calling card. Literally. Left a card with the skull design.”

Erika’s eyes widened. “Like the one found with the body of that poor woman the other day?”

“Exactly. And like the ones found with the victims of the Card Killer twenty years ago.”

“That’s unbelievable. Terrifying.”

She wasn’t sure why, but she felt as if she needed to tell Erika the whole truth. Maybe because she was the closest thing to a real girlfriend Simone had in Carling Lake. Maybe it was just easier since she’d told Lance already, but the words were out before she had a chance to think about it too much. “I was there when Nancy Oliver was murdered.”

Simone launched into the rest of the story without giving Erika a chance to react to what she’d just said.

When she was finished, Erika shifted her chair from the opposite end of the table to Simone’s side and grasped her hand. “I am so sorry you had to go through that. What can I do to help?”

Simone squeezed her friend’s hand. “You just did it.” She breathed out a sigh of relief. “I told Lance everything yesterday after the break-in. He thinks the killer may have seen me twenty years ago and is targeting me now because I may be able to identify him.”

Erika quirked an eyebrow. “Can you?”

She shook her head. “No. All I saw was a figure in the shadows. I’m sure it was a man, but beyond that...”

Erika leaned back in her chair. “Well, that does explain why Lance is parked outside your building so early in the morning.” She shot her a pointed look. “My guess is he’s been there all night.”

Erika’s statement caused Simone to choke on the coffee she’d just taken a sip of. It took a moment to get the coughing under control. “What?”

Erika wore a mischievous smile.

“Sheriff Webb.
